A.V. Bukani Elementary School in rural Eastern Cape of South Africa is a school rich in spirit, filled with caring teachers and students eager to learn.
In 2010, with the help of many volunteers in the United States, we shipped 23,000 books to the school in a 40-foot shipping container which became the library itself. And the books were not just in boxes. Every book was organized by category, entered into a database, and fitted with a library pocket and card. The books were library ready!!
Thanks to the generosity of hundreds who donated books and funds to support shipping, plus the hours and hours of volunteers who organized, sorted, and labeled the books.... A.V. Bukani now has a world-class library
The library provides crucial reinforcement for the English instruction at the school. The students are learning English in addition to their mother tongue Xhosa. Many also speak Afrikaans.
These books are a part of efforts to improve literacy at A.V. Bukani. The professional development with teachers continues. The school and community still have many needs. Even with the thousands of books, the school needs groups of specialized very-early readers which can be used with small group instruction.
If you would like to support this work, you or your organization will receive a charitable tax donation receipt from South Africa Partners, (a 501 (c) 3 US-based charity)
